 the only way to really test for global namespace pollution is to set
 variables, run some functions, then run a test to make sure those
 variables haven't changed - drawbacks to actually implementing this are
 the infinite possibilities for variable names and the fact that these
 tests would have to be added *everywhere* in order to really catch this
 stuff
