 Haven't looked into this, but it doesn't look right.

  1. open
 http://openlayers.org/viewer/?controls=panzoom,layerswitcher,mouse&layers=openlayers,gmaps
  1. switch to one of the Google layers
  1. switch back to the OpenLayers WMS
  1. see tiles outside the max extent from a different zoom level
