 Here is a workaround:
 map.addControl(new
 OpenLayers.Control.OverviewMap({'mapOptions':{'theme':null}}));

 <crschmidt> flavour: I don't think I'd ever thought about that. ( Don't
 know if Tim had.) that should probably be a default.
