 Eric:

 During the 2.4 hackathon, we actually decided that we should always
 include initialize, even if it's not different. The reason for this is
 twofold:

 1. Docs
 2. simply having the initialize makes the class feel 'cleaner'

 This isn't a strong motivation, but at the moment, I believe all the
 classes do this, and we should probably keep it that way unless there's a
 reason not to. (I feel like there was more reasoning, but I've since
 forgotten it -- Erik or Tim might be able to comment more.)
