 I created a patch + file (OpenLayers/Handler/MultiLayerFeatureHandler.js)
 that make it possible to select features on multiple layers. They use the
 geometry intersection tests similarly to what crschmidt suggested.

 I descriped some of the problems/questions with this solution in the
