 I tested this patch using a vector layer with > 50 features and it worked
 as described.  I find this feature to be useful.  In my case, I'm
 providing web-based near-realtime object tracking via a JSON feed, using
 AJAX and OpenLayers.  The ability to rotate the externalGraphic allows me
 to indicate direction of moving objects, and also, in some cases, wind
 direction.
